Holocaust Remembrance Day - Jan 27, 2023

The U.S. and the Holocaust - documentary (44 min)

A film by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick & Sarah Botstein.

January 27, 2023, 10 am
American Corner Trieste - piazza Sant'Antonio, 6 - Trieste - TS
FREE Entry

This documentary series by award winning Ken Burns, Lynn Novick & Sarah Botstein, with the collaboration of the U.S. Department of State, examines America’s response to one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the twentieth century.

Americans considered themselves a “nation of immigrants,” but as the Holocaust unfolded in Europe, the U.S. proved unwilling to open its doors to more than a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of desperate people seeking refuge. Through firsthand testimony of witnesses and survivors, the series delves into the tragic human consequences of public indifference, bureaucratic red tape, and quota laws.

We will view the 44 minute overview.  The 6 hour series is available online on eLibraryUSA - Kanopy.

Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons or modern slavery, is a crime in which force, fraud, or coercion is used to compel a person to perform labor, services, or commercial sex.

Each year the Department of State publishes the Trafficking in Persons Report which documents human trafficking worldwide.

Here's a message from U.S. Secretary of State Blinken about the 2022 report:

There are nearly 25 million people currently victims of trafficking. The United States is committed to fighting it because trafficking destabilizes societies, it undermines economies, it harms workers, it enriches those who exploit them, it undercuts legitimate business, and most fundamentally, because it is so profoundly wrong.

In the United States, since the time of the first colonists, American cross stitch taught girls to read, write, sew, design, create.  Family histories, births, deaths, marriages were even recorded on needlework.

Ukrainian women have been embroidering for centuries. Embroidery became a form of decoration for clothing, fabrics and churches.  The Vyshyvanka is a traditional embroidered shirt.  Folk embroidery was symbolic and connected with a great number of beliefs, myths, and superstitions. Embroidery is still considered a national pastime and is a part of the Ukrainian cultural and national identity.
