50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

Apollo 11 - Moon Landing 1969-2019

On July 20, 1969, humans walked on another world for the first time in history, achieving the goal that President John F. Kennedy had set in 1961, before Americans had even orbited the Earth. After a landing that included dodging a lunar crater and boulder field just before touchdown, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored the area around their lunar landing site for more than two hours. They collected soil and rock samples, set up experiments, planted an American flag, and left behind medallions honoring the Apollo 1 crew and a plaque saying, “We came in peace for all mankind.”
Crew: Neil Armstrong, commander; Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot; Michael Collins, command module pilot
Launch: July 16, 1969; lunar landing: July 20; splashdown: July 24.

The  Refugee Bear Project was established in 2018 to promote integration through entrepreneurship and showcase refugee talent.  This bear was lovingly designed by Azim & Abass, the original "TeddyBoys," as a symbol of love and security.

A simple idea to help two expert tailors (Refugees from Afghanistan via Iran) transition and integrate has since expanded to a volunteer-run weekly sewing workshop for new refugees and members of the community.

The project is supported by volunteers who share their expertise in graphics, marketing, communications and language training.  The American Corner Trieste provides space, equipment and of course, stuffing. All other materials for the bears are donated by the public.

Want more info about a similar project in Rome?  Look at The Sewing Cooperative with refugee tailors from Western Africa.

The American Corner Trieste / Associazione Italo Americana FVG's work with Refugees
Since 2016, with the support of the U.S. Department of State, the American Corner has been teaching Life Skills English for Refugees.

Many of our students have now received their official resident status and can work to support themselves.During our classes, we discovered that many students were expert tailors.  In May 2018 the Refugee Bear Project was born. Each bear is made with donated recycled materials and all bears are absolutely unique.  Always the same size, but in different variations.
