Jazz Appreciation Month

Jazz Appreciation Month (fondly known as "JAM") was created at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2001 to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April.

JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz - to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and more.

THE JAZZ AMBASSADORS

In the 1950's and '60's,tThe Cold War and Civil Rights movement collided when America asked Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman to travel as cultural ambassadors and combat racially-charged Soviet propaganda through their music.

History of Earth Day

In spring 1970, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin created Earth Day as a way to tackle environmental issues and add this to the national agenda. Twenty million Americans demonstrated in different U.S. cities, and it worked!  In December 1970, Congress authorized the creation of a new federal agency, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

National Park Week - April 17-25

Saving my Tomorrow - 30 min., 2017, HBO.   Kids from around the world share their thoughts on a range of environmental issues, from endangered animals and pollution to climate change, while scientists at the American Museum of Natural History talk with kids about how organisms are affected by a changing earth.

10 City Parks that Changed America - 56 min. Documentary 2019, PBS.  Tells the story of 10 visionaries who took open canvases of God-forsaken land, and transformed them into serene spaces that offer city dwellers a respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life. From the elegant squares of Savannah, Georgia, to a park built over a freeway in Seattle, to the more recent High Line in New York, each story introduces the heroes who brought these parks to life, and the villains who preferred to exploit the land for private enterprise. Discover the evolution of our nation's city parks, and learn the history of landscape architecture - an American-born art in which human beings try their best to mimic nature.
