Kaitlyn graduated from the Villanova University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences 2024 (Villanova, Pennsylvania) with a double major in Astronomy and Astrophysics and Italian Studies. She is currently a Fulbright Scholar in Trieste researching Gamma-Ray Astronomy.

Her research includes X-Ray Binary Systems called GRS 1915 * 105. She has presented her work at the American Astronomical Society conference.

In Trieste last summer she did research through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics.

Beauty, brains and groundbreaking innovation.

Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr (Ziegfeld Girl, Samson and Delilah) was known as the world’s most beautiful woman – Snow White and Cat Woman were both based on her iconic look. However, her arresting appearance and glamorous life stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved as an ingenious inventor whose pioneering work helped revolutionize modern communication. An Austrian Jewish emigrant who invented a covert communication system to try to help defeat the Nazis, Lamarr was ignored and told to sell kisses for war bonds instead. It was only toward the very end of her life that tech pioneers discovered that it was her concept that is now used as the basis for secure WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth technologies.

Black History Month 2025

Black History Month, also recognized as African American History Month, holds a significant place in the cultural fabric of the United States, observed every February. This annual commemoration is a dedicated time to celebrate and acknowledge the remarkable achievements, contributions, and overall history of African Americans, showcasing how their efforts have left an indelible mark on the nation’s past and continue to shape its future.

This designated month serves as a crucial opportunity for people across the nation to not only acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Black Americans to society but also to spotlight the pioneers who fought for civil rights and racial equality. A central figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., often serves as a starting point for individuals seeking to build their understanding of African American contributions to the nation.

The first U.S. stamp to honor an African American was the ten-cent Booker T. Washington stamp, issued in 1940. In 1978, the Postal Service initiated the Black Heritage stamp series, to recognize the achievements of individual African Americans.

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month - May 2024

National Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the diverse histories and incredible cultural contributions of Americans hailing from across the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia who have helped shape America and are instrumental in its future success.

The month of May has been designated as AAPI Heritage Month as a special time to honor, embrace and stand with the more than 24 million Asian Americans and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders living in communities throughout the United States.  The month of May was also chosen because it commemorates May 1843 – when the first Japanese immigrants arrived in the U.S.  – and marked the May 1869 completion of the transcontinental railroad, which would not have been possible without the contributions of Chinese Americans.

This year’s theme is “Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future" .  The 2024 theme is an homage to our ancestors and invites all Americans to delve into the legacies, triumphs, and challenges that have shaped AA and NHPI communities. It embodies the spirit of our collective journey – one rooted in resilience and hope – and encourages us to forge intergenerational connections to honor our past and pave a durable path forward.

April 2024 Theme - Digital Storytelling

 

Digital Storytelling: a short form of digital media production that allows everyday people to share experiences and stories. It is a relatively new term which describes the new practice of everyday people who use digital tools to tell their 'story'. Digital stories often present in compelling interactive formats.

Thanks to the Digital Storytelling Workshops, made possible through a Grant from the US Embassy to Italy.  High School and University students have learned the fundamentals of writing, producing, directing, filming, acting in Short Films.  

The High School Group, with students from various schools in Trieste produced "A Drop in The Ocean".  A short film about Immigration and Integration.  More Info about the Short Film HERE.

The University Team, under the guidance of Young for Fun and Professor Sergia Adamo, is producing a short about Food Culture and Integration.

An AP team of Ukrainian journalists trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol struggles to continue their work documenting atrocities of the Russian invasion. As the only international reporters who remain in the city as Russian forces close in, they capture what become some of the most defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more.

After nearly a decade covering international conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war, for The Associated Press, Mstyslav Chernov makes his feature film debut with 20 Days in Mariupol. The film draws on Chernov’s daily news dispatches and personal footage of his own country at war. It offers a vivid, harrowing account of civilians caught in the siege, as well as a window into what it’s like to report from a conflict zone, and the impact of such journalism around the globe.

Made in partnership with The Associated Press, 20 Days in Mariupol has had a decorated run on the 2023 film festival circuit — including winning the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary and the Tim Hetherington Award at Sheffield Film Festival. The film was also honored with DocEdge Film Festival’s awards for “Best International Director” and “Best International Editing.”

Women’s History Month seeks to celebrate women’s achievements and promote women’s equality.  From Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth to Rosa Parks, the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States.

Black History Month 2024

 

African American artists — poets, writers, visual artists, and dancers — have historically served as change agents through their crafts.

Drawn from their ancestors' ancient rites of passage and the shared hopes of liberty, Black artists continue to fuse the rhythmic cadence of creative expressions with the pulsating beats of progress. 

National Museum of African American of History and Culture celebrates Black History Month 2024 by highlighting the "art of resistance" and the artists who used their crafts to uplift the race, speak truth to power and inspire a nation.

Whether digital, literary, visual or performing arts, Black trailblazers and innovators revolutionized their fields, often transforming them by pioneering new techniques and styles. Through art, important issues and figures in African American history are exalted, and underrepresented stories are preserved. For the entire month of February, we invite everyone to join us in celebrating art and its relationship with justice. Art plays a role in communicating emotions, building community and inspiring action.

WHAT IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH?

Each February, the United States celebrates African- American History Month, also known as Black History Month. This annual observance recognizes the important achievements by African Americans in U.S. history.

In 1926, just 61 years after the abolition of slavery, the Association for Study of Negro Life and History decided to sponsor a national week dedicated to Black history in February, coinciding with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

By the late 1960s the success of the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of black identity led many U.S. colleges to start teaching African-American history, which until then had been largely ignored. Soon, universities and cities began honoring this important aspect of the American Story by celebrating African-American History Month. In 1976 President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Under Dr. King’s leadership, nonviolent protest became the defining feature of the modern civil rights movement in America. King first demonstrated the efficacy of passive resistance in 1955–56 while helping to lead the prolonged bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, that succeeded in dismantling bus segregation laws. King’s words were as powerful as his deeds, and his moving and eloquent addresses, which gave hope to millions, continue to inspire people throughout the world.
