Ambassador Jack Markell

 

Jack Markell was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 27, 2023, as the U.S. Ambassador to Italy and San Marino and presented his credentials to Italian President Mattarella on September 22 and to the Sammarinese Captains Regent on September 28.

Prior to serving in Rome, Markell was the U.S. Representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), with the rank of Ambassador. He previously served as the White House Coordinator for Operation Allies Welcome, where he worked to ensure vulnerable Afghans were safely and effectively resettled in the United States.  

Markell also served two terms as Governor of Delaware from 2009 to 2017, and for ten years as Delaware’s State Treasurer. Prior to public service, he served as senior vice president for corporate development at Nextel, among other positions in the private sector, including at Comcast Corporation and McKinsey and Company.

 He and his wife Carla have two adult children, Molly and Michael.

Ambassador Markell spoke with a group of Liceo Petrarca students.  He then met with a group of courageous and resilient Ukrainian women and learned their stories.  Finally he shared a typical Ukrainian meal of Varenyki and Borsch with the Ukrainian group, American Corner / Associazione Italo Americana FVG staff and volunteers.
