OVERVIEW
The World War II Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial site in Italy covers 77 acres, rising in a gentle slope from a broad pool with an island and cenotaph flanked by groups of Italian cypress trees. Beyond the pool is the immense field of headstones of 7,860 of American military war dead, arranged in gentle arcs on broad green lawns beneath rows of Roman pines. The majority of these individuals died in the liberation of Sicily (July 10 to August 17, 1943); in the landings in the Salerno Area (September 9, 1943) and the heavy fighting northward; in the landings at Anzio Beach and expansion of the beachhead (January 22, 1944 to May 1944); and in air and naval support in the regions. 

A wide central mall leads to the memorial, rich in works of art and architecture, expressing America's remembrance of the dead. It consists of a chapel to the south, a peristyle, and a map room to the north. On the white marble walls of the chapel are engraved the names of 3,095 of the missing. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. The map room contains a bronze relief map and four fresco maps depicting the military operations in Sicily and Italy. At each end of the memorial are ornamental Italian gardens.

A new, 2,500-square-foot center visitor center opened in May 2014. Through interpretive exhibits that incorporate personal stories, photographs, films, and interactive displays, visitors will gain a better understanding of this critical campaign that contributed to the Allied victory in Europe during World War II.

November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States. Americans usually plan parades, ceremonies and tributes to those who have served, and are currently serving, in the U.S. military.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans will observe Veterans Day 2020 somewhat differently.

Edinburg, Texas, for example, is holding a virtual parade, with photos of veterans, video segments about fallen heroes and footage of marching bands. Many U.S. cities may adopt a similar model, and across the nation, veteran-themed civic events — including military plane flyovers — will mandate socially distanced gatherings where masks are required.

But what the holiday represents to America will not change.

“As we celebrate Veterans Day, we pause to recognize the brave men and women who have fearlessly and faithfully worked to defend the United States and our freedom,” said President Trump on Veterans Day 2019. Those words ring true every year.

In 2020, as always, the memorial amphitheater around the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington remains the focal point for national Veterans Day ceremonies. The traditions are firmly established: A combined color guard representing all military services executes “present arms” at the tomb, the president lays a wreath, and a bugler plays “Taps,” the haunting call used at U.S. military funerals.

In 1958, two unidentified American war dead, one from World War II and one from the Korean War, were buried in Arlington National Cemetery alongside the Unknown Soldier from World War I. In 1984, an unknown serviceman from the Vietnam War was placed beside them. They symbolize all Americans who gave their lives in all wars.

The remains of the Vietnam Unknown were exhumed in 1998; he was identified through DNA testing and reinterred in another cemetery. Since then, that crypt has remained vacant

Armistice Day becomes Veterans Day

The earlier, more narrowly focused Armistice Day commemorated the end of fighting in World War I under the armistice implemented at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918 — the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day a year later.

To pay tribute to the 16 million Americans who fought in World War II (including 407,000 who died) and others who served the nation in war, Congress and President Dwight Eisenhower re-designated the November 11 holiday as Veterans Day in 1954. “Let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain,” Eisenhower wrote in his first Veterans Day proclamation.

On Veteran’s Day 2004, veterans of the Second World War attended the dedication of the National World War II Memorial on Washington’s National Mall. The Korean War is commemorated with a memorial nearby, comprising 19 statues representing a squad on patrol. More than 54,000 U.S. soldiers died in the three-year conflict.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, dedicated in 1982 and also on the National Mall, features two polished black granite walls inscribed with the names of more than 58,000 U.S. service members killed or unaccounted for in the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam Women’s Memorial was dedicated in 1993. Located a few yards from the main Vietnam Veterans Memorial, it depicts three women, including one caring for a wounded soldier. Nearly 2.6 million men and 7,500 women served in Vietnam; more than 83 percent of the women were nurses.

11/11/2020 ore 17  - Cimitero Nazionale di Arlington ceremonia intorno alla Tomba degli Ignoti in LIVE Streaming su Facebook American Corner Trieste.  La cerimonia nazionale del Veterans Day si tiene ogni anno l'11 novembre presso il cimitero nazionale di Arlington. La cerimonia inizia precisamente alle 11:00 (ore 17 italiana) con una corona di fiori deposta presso la Tomba degli Ignoti e prosegue all'interno dell'Anfiteatro Memoriale con una sfilata di colori da parte delle organizzazioni di veterani e le osservazioni dei dignitari. La cerimonia ha lo scopo di onorare e ringraziare tutti coloro che hanno prestato servizio nelle forze armate degli Stati Uniti. 

17/11/2020, ore 10:30 - Cimitero Americano Sicilia-Roma a Nettuno Visita Virtuale e Webchat su Facebook American Corner Trieste con la soprintendente del cimitero e in collaborazione con l'Ambasciata USA.  7.861 lapidi bianche, corrispondenti a tutti gli americani deceduti (anche donne crocerossine) in diversi contesti: nell'operazione Shingle; in quella concretizzatasi con lo sbarco in Sicilia iniziato il 10 luglio del 1943; nello sbarco a Salerno, che ebbe luogo nella zona della città campana il 9 settembre del 1943. In fondo vi è un grande memorial, consistente di una cappella, un peristilio e una stanza delle mappe illustranti le operazioni. In posizione preminente nel peristilio, si erge il monumento ai "Fratelli in armi", una scultura che simboleggia il soldato e il marinaio statunitensi, fianco a fianco, ognuno con un braccio intorno alle spalle dell'altro. Nelle bianche mura di marmo della cappella, vi sono i nomi dei 3.095 dispersi.  In 490 tombe sono raccolte le spoglie di coloro che non poterono essere identificati.

L'11 novembre è il Veterans Day negli Stati Uniti e gli americani di solito pianificano sfilate, cerimonie e tributi a coloro che hanno prestato servizio e sono attualmente in servizio nell'esercito americano.  A causa della pandemia COVID-19, gli americani osserveranno il Veterans Day 2020 in modo leggermente diverso.

Nel 2020, come sempre, l'anfiteatro commemorativo intorno alla Tomba degli Ignoti nel Cimitero Nazionale di Arlington fuori Washington D.C. rimane il punto focale delle cerimonie nazionali del Veterans Day.
