      Black History Month 2025

Black History Month, also recognized as African American History Month, holds a significant place in the cultural fabric of the United States, observed every February. This annual commemoration is a dedicated time to celebrate and acknowledge the remarkable achievements, contributions, and overall history of African Americans, showcasing how their efforts have left an indelible mark on the nation’s past and continue to shape its future.

This designated month serves as a crucial opportunity for people across the nation to not only acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Black Americans to society but also to spotlight the pioneers who fought for civil rights and racial equality. A central figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., often serves as a starting point for individuals seeking to build their understanding of African American contributions to the nation.

The first U.S. stamp to honor an African American was the ten-cent Booker T. Washington stamp, issued in 1940. In 1978, the Postal Service initiated the Black Heritage stamp series, to recognize the achievements of individual African Americans.

INTELLIGENZA ARTIFICIALE VS. FAKE NEWS: CHI VINCERÀ?

      🗓 21 marzo 2025
      📍 American Corner Trieste – Piazza sant’Antonio n. 6
      🕘 Ore 9.00 – 12.00

      Descrizione dell’evento

      Agenda

      09:00 Accoglienza scuole.

11:00 Sfida pratica: "Intelligenza artificiale vs. fake news".

Presidential Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery

Official Presidential Portraits from the National Portrait Gallery - Smithsonian, Washington D.C.

Ever since George Washington became President in 1789, the presidency has been a major focus of American political life, and as with nearly everything associated with that office, presidential portraits have from the outset attracted considerable popular interest. There was, in fact, a time when painted, sculpted or engraved likenesses were the only means that most people knew their Presidents. In the case of Washington, there were even sporadic debates through much of the nineteenth century over which portrait had most accurately recorded him for posterity.

It is no surprise, then, that presidential portraiture has been a major collecting concern at the National Portrait Gallery ever since it opened its doors in 1968. The media for presidential imagery has ranged everywhere from the traditional oil-on-canvas and marble to cotton handkerchiefs and sewing-box lids, and the Gallery houses today a richly varied array of presidential likenesses. In the selection of portraits on view here, some are more sophisticated and striking than others; some are quite rare or altogether unique; some are calculated to impress us with their gravity while others are warmly intimate. Taken collectively, however, they all have one thing in common: In one degree or another, they all evoke the history of the nation's highest office and the individuals who have occupied it.

TESOL Trieste Local Group 2024 25

      Next Event:

      TESOL ITALY TRIESTE Local Group

cordially invites you to the Free Workshop:

      Dyslexia in Second Language Learners

      Friday, January 24, 2025 - 18:00-19:00
      Piazza Sant’Antonio Nuovo, 6 – Trieste
Associazione Italo Americana FVG / American Corner Trieste

In English-speaking countries, the percentage of students diagnosed with dyslexia is almost as high as 15%. At the same time, in Italy, the numbers are significantly lower, mostly due to a more accommodating language, but the diagnosis is on the rise. How can we help these students work around their difficulties? Time and resources are not always on the teachers' side and insufficient one-on-one time is given to the students with SpLDs (Specific Learning Difficulties). In this workshop, you will learn different activities you can use in the classroom, that help both students with and without dyslexia.

This workshop will be led by Giulia Gentile, a freelance English teacher and translator. She holds a B.A. in Linguistic Mediation from CIELS and an M.A. in Foreign Languages & Literature from the University of Trieste where she graduated with honors with the dissertation "Teaching dyslexic students how to learn a foreign language: techniques and accommodations". Currently, she teaches English at the Associazione Italo Americana and works as a translator.

Monika  Kavalir - University of Ljubljana
What is English to You? University students’ attitudes to English

For young people in Europe today, English is no longer a foreign language in the traditional sense, but rather an additional language with which they come into contact while still learning their first language and one they interact with daily, especially if they choose to study English at the university level. This talk will engage the audience in thinking about their rapport with English and will report the results of an extensive online survey among students at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. This is part of a developing project to investigate when and to what extent young people use English and what their attitudes towards English and their first language(s) are, with Italy being one of the countries included in the SPEAKEng project.
