Assessing cultural and
financial implications of refugee arrivals in Friuli-Venezia-Giulia at the
Municipal Level The purpose of this Fulbright research is to investigate the
impact of refugee arrivals on the municipalities of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and
to determine to what extent the presence of refugees in these areas is driving
the political narrative and decision-making surrounding migration policy. At
the same time, the research will analyze the firsthand accounts of refugees
living in the Italian asylum system in the region of Friuli to gauge how the
political outcomes are directly impacting the lives of refugees. The research
will use assessments following interviews with political leaders, aid
organizations and other relevant actors involved in migration policy making
throughout the region. At the conclusion of the Fulbright research period (July
2017) the outcomes will be used to identify the role of politics in the
migration crisis in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and its impact on refugee
communities, minority populations and the asylum system in Italy as a whole.
