JANUARY 

Happy 2014! Hope you rang in the new year in style! We sure had a nice holiday, and now we are ready to roll with intensives, the next round of 10-week courses, Storytime, TGIF, WHS and more! See you at the Association in January!

 

WINTER COURSES – Our courses continue all year long.  

You can join our classes at any time, if we have space.  Participation in the previous session is not required.  Remember, when you pay with an IBAN, you have a 5% discount.  In the causale, specify the name of the student, name of class, day and time of the class.  Bring a copy of the IBAN in order to get your receipt.  We confirm all of our regular courses starting on the week of January 13th.  10 more weeks at the same price as last quarter.  Your payment must be received by January 6th in order to guarantee your place.  On January 7th we will open up the enrollment for students on the waiting lists.  If you are a new family interested in Scuola Materna and Elementary Classes, please send us an e-mail with your preferences and we will put your child on the waiting list.   Click here for the Details for the Winter Classes  for Children and Teens and Adults.

 

INTENSIVE COURSESIf you’re interested in Intensive English for Adults in the afternoons we are organizing another session. 5 days, 2 hours a day.  “Una spinta intensiva” to start off your new year!

 


We will have a more intensive 5 week Italian Class in the mornings in addition to the Monday evening 10 week class.  Feel free to join in! Ti aspettiamo! A presto! (We’re waiting for you! See you soon!)

 

AMERICAN FILM SERIES 2013/14

Our 33rd Annual English Language American Film Series will be shown at the Cinema dei Fabbri, Via dei Fabbri 2/A in Trieste.  Showings will be on Thursdays at 2, 4, 6:30 and 9 pm.    Here is the complete list of films for the 2013/14 season.  You can pick up your definitive Membership Cards in our Office from November 11th or directly at the Cinema dei Fabbri on American Film day. 

January 16thThe Sessions ( 2012, 95 min) Comedy, drama, romance with John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, William H. Macy.  Oscar nomination, best actress in a supporting role.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013, 132 min.) directed by J. J. Abrams, with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

Made for Each Other is back!  This year at our Piazza Sant’Antonio Multimedia Room.  Open to All, no membership required.  Comparative American TV and Cinema in original version.  One week a TV show and the next a film, regarding the same theme.  A lesson in Pop Culture 101 and English commentary to put everything in perspective by Prof. Leonardo Buonomo.  Here is the complete list.

The theme of the second “Couple” is TV Journalism.

THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN TV

PBS Series – The US of TV – Prime Time in America – A history of American sit-coms.  Each episode focuses on one character archetype that has remained a staple of primetime through the generations.  Featuring 100 interviews with top actors, writers, creators.    

Jan. 10th - The Man of the House (60 min) – From breadwinner to the post-feminist dad.

Jan 17th - The Independent Woman (60 min) – From insecure housewife to independent career woman.

Jan. 24th - The Misfit (60 min) – How hillbillies, monsters and computer geeks became the “new normal.”

Jan 31st - The Crusader (60 min) – Cowboys, police and doctors, trying to do the right thing.

 

TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday)– Friday, January 17th, 7 – 9  pm

This month we’re going Anglo-Saxon with PUB Food served at AIA FVG by the Golden Horse Pub

For this member’s only (and their families) event, we ask you to make a reservation and pre-pay your €7 contribution per person in our office by January 15th.   TGIF is open to all ages so feel free to bring your children.  Remember that this is a BYOB evening.  Bring a bottle of wine, beer or whatever you wish to drink.  Cheers!

 

SATURDAY STORYTIME  - Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC with a Reservation

We have another great program of stories this year.  We will focus on the authors Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) and Julia Donaldson  (author of Gruffalo) and we also have some Richard Scarry and Michael Rosen favorites!  A story read by one of our volunteer readers and a related activity.  Lots of fun and no stress.  Please make a reservation at aia.fvg@gmail.com for your children so we know how many little ones to expect!  Remember, if the city closes schools because of bad weather, we will NOT hold Storytime that day.

WELCOME HOME, STRANGER – Adopt-a-Stranger – Friday, January 17th 7:30 pm at TGIF

A great group of newcomers from age 6 months to 80!  Helping newcomers live happily in Trieste!   This month our Welcome Home Stranger friends will be at TGIF.  Meet some new people, speak English.  We are still matching people up for our “Adopt-a-Stranger” initiative. Become a mentor and a friend to a newcomer, especially during the holidays, which can get lonely when you are far from home! MEMBERSHIP!

Membership is valid until October 2014!  In addition to our American Cinema Series, we have a fantastic library with over 5000 books, up-to-date magazines and 1300 DVD’s, as well as the Children’s Corner Library and DVD collection.  Everything is available for check-out.  Your membership is also valid for Members-Only activities.   €25 for students, teachers and over age 65 and €35 for regular membership.  There is a form to be filled out.  Click here to download the membership form or pick it up directly in the office.  Memberships can be made in the Association or directly at the Cinema on American movie day before the show.  More questions?
