DECEMBER
The holidays are upon us. We already kicked off the holiday season with Thanksgiving (see our photos). We are thankful for all of our volunteers and in the month of November a big round of applause goes to Erin, Valentina, Andrea, Sheila, Bethany, Corinna, Milena, Martina! We have over 45 volunteers who work in a variety of roles!

WINTER SEMESTER COURSES

Dec. 13th – Our monthly appointment to have a coffee and some good conversation (in English). On the same date we’ll host the Cookie Exchange. You bring 6 dozen home baked cookies (packaged 1 dozen a package) and bring home a variety of 6 dozen other cookies from our other bakers. What a nice way to get a variety of holiday treats!
FRIDAY AMERICAN EXPERIENCE in our Aula Magna at 6 p.m. – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
The best of American culture and documentaries
Dec. 7th – Conference: From Ragtime to Jazz – Our guest speaker – Livio Laurenti, director/ founder of the Trieste Early Jazz Orchestra and the Joplin Ragtime Orchestra. The conference includes jazz history and music clips. Mr. Laurenti will speak in Italian. December 8th, at 8 pm, the Trieste Early Jazz Orchestra will perform a free concert at the Teatro F. Preseren in Bagnoli della Rosandra. You are all invited!
Dec. 14th – JAZZ a Film by Ken Burns – GUMBO episode 1-–Discover how jazz was born in New Orleans in the 1890’s in the Afro-American Community. A fusion of Caribbean beat, Italian opera, ragtime, military marches, Baptist church music. 90 min.

BOOK CLUB – We would like to start a Book Club in 2013. If you are interested in participating, please contact us.
A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS – We are a volunteer run organization. If you would like to volunteer, please contact us. We especially need people to work our Front Desk in the afternoons. Think about setting aside 2 hours once a week to give us a hand in answering the phone, checking out library books, answering questions.
STORYTIME PREPARATION – Saturday Storytime starts in January. A call for volunteer Story Readers (mother tongue English), Craft and Activity Assistants! Send us an e-mail or contact us in the office. We are also looking for school supply donations to use for our activities (markers, crayons, colored pencils, construction paper, glue, kiddie scissors, etc.) Please check your closets!

Halloween is over. What a great party by the way! Here are some photos. Thanks to all of our super volunteers for designing a fantastic haunted room! Joe, Steven, Grace, Sheila, Patrizia, Erin, Nick, Silvia, Karry, Filippo, Gaia, Cristina, Marco, Fenia, Martina, Valentina, Anna, Milena, we could not have done it without you! We thank all our young guests for their (spooky) Halloween spirit. We certainly inaugurated our Kids Zone classroom in style. Now it’s time to look ahead to US Elections, Thanksgiving, and Cookie Fest with St. Nicolas. Christmas will be here in a wink. It’s already snowing.

Our FALL COURSES continue. The Pre-School (Scuola Materna) class begins on Wednesday, November 7th from 5 – 6 p.m. for 5 weeks. You can still register your toddler. THANKSGIVING – November 22nd, 8 p.m. at the Ristorante Tre Magnoni – Pre-Paid Reservation Required
Our Thanksgiving team has planned a fabulous Thanksgiving Feast at the Tre Magnoni. This is the one day of the year, that we don’t have to work in the Association. We’re leaving the cooking and cleanup to the experts and enjoying the evening. Space is limited. Pre-Paid reservations are required. Come to the office to pay and reserve. Cost: €40 per adult and reduced price for children. Beverages are included.
November 16th at 6 p.m.: Member, veteran AIA teacher, and our very own Thanksgiving Dinner organizer, Andrea Garwood, will be our guest lecturer for “The Ultimate Thanksgiving: Traditions, Recipes, Organization” Everything you need to organize a successful Thanksgiving Dinner.
COOKIE FEST and ST. NICOLAS VISIT – November 30th 5 – 7 p.m.
Bring your favorite Holiday cookies (and the recipes) to share, while we await the arrival of St. Nicolas/Santa Klaus. This event is open to adults and children. Bring your Christmas wish list and tell Santa in person (he speaks all the languages of the world, by the way). Please call the office if you can bring some of your home baked goods and recipes! We’re looking for volunteers to do cooking demonstrations too!
