OCTOBER
Hard to beat September, but we probably will!  Welcome to all of our new students and new members! In addition to our regular activities we are adding:  Family Date Night and Totally Teen Club and our traditional Halloween Party for children.  Our main event for the month will be “Our American Days – I Nostri Giorni Americani” to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the departure of the TRUST – Trieste US Troops.  Lots going on!  Read carefully and check our links.  We don’t want you to miss a thing!
 
It’s that time of year again!  You can purchase your Memberships for 2014/15.  The prices remain unchanged:  €35 for the Regular Adult Membership and €25 for Students age 16 and over, Teachers and over age 65.  To attend courses, the student (or their parent must be a member).  Membership is valid for checking out books, magazines, DVD’s and for the 2014/15 American Cinema Program in the Original Version at Cinema dei Fabbri beginning on October 30th.  Membership is valid one school year and must be renewed annually.  
 
AMERICAN FILM SERIES at Cinema dei Fabbri, Via dei Fabbri 2/A – Shows at 14, 16, 18:30 and 21 Members Only – No single tickets can be sold.  Please get your membership in the Association, prior to the first film.

Dir. Nat Faxon, Jim Rash. Starring Toni Collette, Steve Carell. Comedy /Drama, 103 min.
 
LE VIE DELLE FOTO – October 2-31 – at AIA FVG  during office hours –OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Trieste USA 1945-54.  We are an exhibition space in this city-wide photographic exhibit with photos from the TRUST days, from the Fototeca Civici Musei Storia ed Arte di Trieste, the Henriquez Collection and Ugo Borsatti and collectors.  Come in and take a look at Trieste from 1945-54. 
 
OUR AMERICAN DAYS – I nostri giorni americani - Sala Tripovich - OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - Saturday Oct. 25th
Oct. 25 – 3 -6 pm – TRUST Exhibit in the Foyer of the Sala Tripcovich
6-8 pm –Our American Days – I Nostri Giorni Americani – Documentary Film produced by Pilgrim Film followed by Sounds of the ‘40’s Swing Concert with the Shipyard Big Band.

Monday Nights at 8 pm   The Bacall Williams Tribute continues.  English Version films with Commentary.

Special Film for Our American Days

Oct. 27th  at 8 pm -  The Bridges over Madison County, 1995, 135 min.  Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood.  The story of an Italian housewife, living in Iowa and married to an America soldier she met in WWII,  and her weekend love story with a photo reporter. 

 

TUESDAY MORNING REMIX in the American Corner

Oct. 7th , 10-11:30am RELAXATION AND ANTI-STRESS in ENGLISH

Oct.  20th, 10-11am - SHORT STORY CLUB – New Entries and Old Classics – Short Story Club.  This month we’ll be discussing excerpts from George Garrett’s The Old Army Game.  You can come to the office to pick up your copies. 

Oct.  27th, 10- 12. – TUESDAY COFFEE BREAK – Have a cup of coffee and some great conversation. New day, same great conversation!

Oct 9 – Meet Feliciana Johnson who will speak about her Radio Days on Hillbilly Hits and Night Watch on the Allied Radio Station and as a singer with the Big Bands in the 40's and 50's.

FRIDAY NIGHTS

FRIDAY FAMILY DATE NIGHT – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Oct. 10th – 5 pm - Family Date Night – Showing of E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web, Animated Film 1973, 93 min.  Bring the kids, see a family friendly movie in English.  Come even if you don’t have kids!

TOTALLY TEEN CLUB – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Oct. 3rd 5-7 pm – Totally Teen Club – Teen Organizing Meeting to see what teens want to do!  Come down – for ages 13-20.  Open to the Public.  Bring your thinking caps!  It will be what you teens want it to be! Lego Mindstorms, Movies, Games, Video Film Making, Karaoke?  You decide!

Oct. 17th – Totally Teen Club – Second Meeting

October 24th – Totally Teen Club - Volunteering at our Halloween Party for kids.

 

TGIF Thank God It’s Friday – Members Only

Oct. 10th – 7 pm – Bollecine – Piazza Sant’Antonio.   See you there directly to kick off the year in style!

 

 HALLOWEEN PARTY – MEMBERS ONLY

Oct. 24th – 5-7 pm - Reserve for your kids (age 0-12).  €5 contribution per family requested.  Games, Trick-or-Treating, Jack O’Lanterns! Send reservations to aia.fvg@gmail.com with names of children and ages. 

 

WELCOME HOME STRANGER – OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Oct. 13th – 6 – 7 pm – New in Trieste?  Come and meet some new and old-timers and exchange experiences.

 

WINE, CHEESE and BOOKS – October 16th at 8 pm

The Evening Book Club is on the road.  Monthly meetings are held in different venues each month.  The thriller  for October is Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  Want to participate?  Send an e-mail to aia.fvg@gmail.com. The November book title will be revealed at the October.

 

WOMEN’S SPACE –OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Oct. 20th – 6-7 pm, Conference:  The US Mexico Border Wall:  Life Stories on the Fringe, Speaker:  Lea-Sophie Lazic-Reuschel – The debate on US Immigration Reform and the Stories of Mexican Migrants.

 


The stats are in:  10 hours and 30 minutes, 355 pages, 117 volunteer readers from age 14 to 88 anni, 3 languages (English, Italian, Spanish).  Thanks to all participants for making this a great event! 

In case you missed it you can see the photos of all readers on the American Corner Trieste Facebook Page and watch the recorded readings of John Phillips, US Ambassador to Italy, Jeff Galvin,  Elizabeth McKay, Nicholas Giacobbe.  Mayor Roberto Cosolini was also a reader as were 2 classes from Liceo Nordio.  What a way to celebrate the European Day of Languages!  Congratulations to Noemi Roma, 3C of the Liceo Artistico Umberto Nordio, for winning the Kindle Paperwhite!

 

AMERICAN CORNER TRIESTE – Programs, consultation of the library, public internet access computers, and Wi-Fi are always free and open to the public.  It’s a great place to study, meet friends, bring your kids.  While you’re at it, send us an e-mail to get a password for eLibraryUSA , a fantastic on-line library and resource center for American Corner patrons around the world.

 

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Remember that we are a volunteer organization.  We are looking for people to work in the afternoons at the Front Desk, manage library checkouts and for a variety of roles.  Contact us!  As you can see, we’ll keep you busy!
