10 am - When I Rise - PBS 60 min. Documentary. A gifted black music student at the University of Texas is thrust into a civil rights storm that changes her life forever. Barbara Smith Conrad is cast in an opera opposite a white male classmate fueling a racist backlash from members of the Texas legislature. Barbara's expulsion from the cast escalates the incident to national news, prompting unexpected support from a pop superstar. This small-town girl, whose voice and spirit stem from her roots in East Texas, emerges as an internationally celebrated mezzo-soprano and headlines on stages worldwide.

DONIGAN MERRITT reads from his book BLOSSOM.
Donigan Merritt has an MFA from the Iowa Writers Workshop and has published seven novels, including "Possessed by Shadows" (Other Press, 2005), "The Common Bond" (Other Press, 2008), and “Blossom” (2011). “Blossom” paints a picture of the beginning of the
Civil Rights Movement in southern Arkansas. The protagonist, David Early, returns to the small southern town of Blossom after a 20 year absence when his father dies. In a series of flashbacks, he remembers the struggles with racism after he takes a stand with the town's African-American community in its first pro-integration protest--causing him guilt and putting his life in danger. This book is about the Deep South, about long memories and our inability to escape our personal histories.
