Black History Month 2025

Black History Month, also recognized as African American History Month, holds a significant place in the cultural fabric of the United States, observed every February. This annual commemoration is a dedicated time to celebrate and acknowledge the remarkable achievements, contributions, and overall history of African Americans, showcasing how their efforts have left an indelible mark on the nation’s past and continue to shape its future.

This designated month serves as a crucial opportunity for people across the nation to not only acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Black Americans to society but also to spotlight the pioneers who fought for civil rights and racial equality. A central figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., often serves as a starting point for individuals seeking to build their understanding of African American contributions to the nation.

The first U.S. stamp to honor an African American was the ten-cent Booker T. Washington stamp, issued in 1940. In 1978, the Postal Service initiated the Black Heritage stamp series, to recognize the achievements of individual African Americans.

Presidential Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery

Official Presidential Portraits from the National Portrait Gallery - Smithsonian, Washington D.C.

Ever since George Washington became President in 1789, the presidency has been a major focus of American political life, and as with nearly everything associated with that office, presidential portraits have from the outset attracted considerable popular interest. There was, in fact, a time when painted, sculpted or engraved likenesses were the only means that most people knew their Presidents. In the case of Washington, there were even sporadic debates through much of the nineteenth century over which portrait had most accurately recorded him for posterity.

It is no surprise, then, that presidential portraiture has been a major collecting concern at the National Portrait Gallery ever since it opened its doors in 1968. The media for presidential imagery has ranged everywhere from the traditional oil-on-canvas and marble to cotton handkerchiefs and sewing-box lids, and the Gallery houses today a richly varied array of presidential likenesses. In the selection of portraits on view here, some are more sophisticated and striking than others; some are quite rare or altogether unique; some are calculated to impress us with their gravity while others are warmly intimate. Taken collectively, however, they all have one thing in common: In one degree or another, they all evoke the history of the nation's highest office and the individuals who have occupied it.

Remembering Jimmy Carter (1924-2024)

Documentary Film - December 8, 2025 at 11 am

FREE - In English

From Small-Town Roots to Global Impact: The Inspiring Journey of Jimmy Carter, America’s Longest-Lived President, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, and Humanitarian Icon

Jimmy Carter (1994-2024), the 39th president of the United States, is not only celebrated for his political achievements but also for his remarkable post-presidential legacy. Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter has lived an extraordinary life spanning over a century. As of today, he holds the record as the longest-lived U.S. president in history, leaving an indelible mark on American politics and global humanitarian efforts.

Jimmy Carter: Rock and Roll President

This rockumentary-style presidential portrait shows how Jimmy Carter reinvigorated a post-Watergate America-with the music of the counterculture, including the Allman Brothers, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and Jimmy Buffett. Low on campaign funds and lacking in name recognition, Carter relied on support from these artists to give him a crucial boost in the Democratic primaries. Once Carter was elected, the musicians became frequent guests in the White House.
