08/02, 11 am – What's the Buzz this Week? A Chat about Amanda Gorman – with Karoline Steckley,  President -AIAFVG and Special Guests

Amanda Gorman just wowed the world with her poem The Hill We Climb, composed for and recited at the Presidential Inauguration.  Amanda was the Youth Poet Laureate at age 17.  At 22, she is the youngest poet to read at an Inauguration, and has a reading scheduled at the Super Bowl of all places.  In addition she's a Harvard University graduate, a fashion icon and more!  

Karoline will look at Amanda Gorman and her inspiration to write the Inauguration poem and also take a closer look at some of her interesting facets that made her the star of the inauguration. 

Karoline Steckley is the President of the Associazione Italo Americana FVG, an English Teacher at AIAFVG and CIOFS FB FVG in Trieste, a blogger, a writer, a TESOL Member and Regular Speaker at TESOL Italy Conventions, originally from Racine, WI.

Black History Month 2021

 February is Black History Month and this year we are celebrating African American Poets.  

What is Black History Month?

Each February, the United States celebrates African- American History Month, also known as Black History Month.  This annual observance recognizes the important achievements by African Americans in U.S. history.

In 1926, just 61 years after the abolition of slavery, the Association for Study of Negro Life and History decided to sponsor a national week dedicated to Black history in February, coinciding with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

By the late 1960s the success of the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of black identity led many U.S. colleges to start teaching African-American history, which until then had been largely ignored. Soon, universities and cities began honoring this important aspect of the American Story by celebrating African-American History Month. 

In 1976 President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Individual Lessons are available for students who prefer a one-on-one approach and/or prefer to have online lessons with the presence of the instructor. Instructors are assigned based on student needs and individual availability. Individual lessons can also supplement group courses.

Additional material is supplied to the student to allow them to deep dive into the theme of the lesson.

Elementary 345 - The 40 minute lessons are on the Zoom platform- if you prefer a longer lesson.

21/01, 11 am – Short Story Club - Poetry at Presidential Inaugurations – We’ll read and discuss Presidential Inaugural Poems on Facebook LIVE  American Corner Trieste.  Amanda Gorman, the first US Youth Poet Laureate, will be the reader in 2021.

We'll read the 5 and discuss the poems from past inaugurations:  Robert Frost (Kennedy, 1961), Maya Angelou (Clinton, 1993), Miller Williams (Clinton, 1997), and Elizabeth Alexander (Obama, 2009), Richard Blanco (Obama, 2013).

For more than 200 years America’s citizens have witnessed the Inauguration ceremonies of the President and Vice President of the United States. From the first Inauguration of George Washington, in New York City, in 1789, to today, as we prepare for the 59th Inaugural Ceremonies, the Swearing-In Ceremonies represent both national renewal and continuity of leadership. As each president has offered a vision for America’s future, we reflect on the heritage of Inaugurals past.

Since 1901, and in accordance with the 20th Amendment of the United States Constitution, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC) has been responsible for the planning and execution of the Inaugural Ceremonies of the President-elect and Vice President-elect of the United States at the Capitol. 

The Presidential Inauguration will be different this year with very few live spectators, no crowds and a virtual parade.  

Watch the Inauguration of Joseph Biden - President and Kamala Harris - Vice President live from the Capitol Steps on January 20th at 5:30 pm Italian time.  We'll watch the Live Stream from the PBS NewsHour together on Facebook Live.

January 2021 Newsletter Associazione Italo Americana FVG / American Corner Trieste

2021 is finally here and we’re ALL looking forward to a BRAND NEW YEAR together.  We hope that you are well and were able to enjoy family time during the holidays. Join us for Winter English Classes and Virtual Activities.   ACTIVITIES and COURSES will continue ONLINE due to the Covid-19 health emergency, until further notice. ENGLISH CLASSES for Members Courses begin the week of January 11th and continue for 10 weekly lessons.  Online Registration is open.  New Members and Students are Welcome! Courses begin ONLINE.  We will return to the classroom when possible.  We are an Association and not a School.  Online Individual Lessons for Adults and Children are also available.   Our online system includes: Small Classes Lessons sent prior to the lesson via email WhatsApp groups for each section to facilitate communication with the teacher Zoom platform ONLINE REGISTRATION   It is possible to pay:  ONLINE by Credit Card In the Association with CASH payment during our morning Office Hours (Monday to Friday 9-13), starting on January 7th. With Welfare Aziendale Remember that we are an association and parents, with children under age 16, must become members.  If your child is 16 or over, the student must be a member. The Associazione has a great positive staff and wonderful teachers.     AMERICAN FILM SERIES 2020/21 Due to the closure of cinemas and theaters, the series has been postponed, awaiting government decrees on the reopening.  The films will be recuperated.    ONLINE EVENTS The American Corner is offering ONLINE ACTIVITIES.  The Theme for the Month is the Presidential Inauguration.   eLibraryUSA – Temporary Remote Access – Request your personal access code today.  American newspapers, magazines, videos, children’s resources, and databases available remotely only during Covid-19 (afterwards only in the American Corner).    14/01, 3pm – Transatlantic Thursday Webchat on various topics on Facebook LIVE–US Embassy to Italy. – Various topics every Thursday at 3pm.   14/01, 7 pm – Women’s Book Club – discussing Travels with Charley: In Search of America  by John Steinbeck on Zoom.    19/01, 11 am – Martin Luther King, Jr: I Have A Dream Viewing Party and Discussion on American Corner Trieste Home Theater Facebook Group. The documentary features highlights of major speeches given by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.   20/1, 5:30 pm – Presidential Inauguration Viewing Party on Facebook LIVE  American Corner Trieste.   21/01, 11 am – Short Story Club - Poetry at Presidential Inaugurations – We’ll read and discuss Presidential Inaugural Poems on Facebook LIVE  American Corner Trieste.  Who will be the poet in 2021?   27/01, 11 am – NEW!  Let’s Chat in English – Join us on Zoom and we’ll have a conversation in English.  The Meeting Code will be published a few days ahead.  Get digital.
