American Citizens.  PLEASE REQUEST your ABSENTEE BALLOTS EARLY.  

Primaries in the Spring and General Elections in November 2020. 

American can vote wherever they are.  

American citizens over 18 years of age at the time of the election, even those who never lived in the US, have the right to vote. 

Request your absentee ballots from your State / County, using the forms in the link below.  Depending on your state, you can receive your ballots by mail or email.  ATTN:  If you mail documents through Italian mail, you must apply Italian postage.

Women's History Month

100th Anniversary of the Women's Right to Vote in the USA - 1920 - 2020

The first Constitutional Amendment to secure votes for women was introduced to Congress in 1878. It failed. By 1919, suffragists get another amendment introduced to Congress that would secure women's right to vote. The 19th Amendment passed both the House and Senate. The states ratified the 19th Amendment in 1920, officially recognizing women’s right to vote.

In I AM A GIRL, we meet 14-year-old Kimsey from Cambodia, forced to sell her virginity at 12; Aziza from Afghanistan, who will be shot if she goes to school; Breani, a teen living in a ghetto of NYC and dreaming of stardom; Katie from Australia, who is recovering from a suicide attempt; Habiba from Cameroon, betrothed to a man 20 years her senior; and Manu from Papua New Guinea, about to become a mother at 14 following her first sexual encounter. Louisa May Alcott's autobiographical account of her life with her three sisters in Concord, Massachusetts in the 1860s. With their father fighting in the American Civil War, sisters Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth are at home with their mother, a very outspoken women for her time. The story tells of how the sisters grow up, find love and find their place in the world.

This two-part presentation will look at a pivotal time in American history as we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of women’s suffrage in the U.S.  Ms. Anne Johnson will discuss the issues leading up to the crucial vote allowing women the right to vote and show a short video on the drama in the state of Tennessee, the final state needed for ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. constitution.  Following this presentation, a brief look at the resources available from the Office of English Language in the U.S. Department of State.

Ms. Johnson joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 2006 as a regional Information Resource Officer (now Regional Public Engagement Specialist) and has served in Ghana, South Africa, Argentina, Washington D.C., Burma and Italy. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, she worked in legal, non-profit and public libraries in areas of administration, marketing and programming.  Currently based in Rome, Ms. Johnson works with American Spaces in nine European countries.  She has a master’s degree in library science from Emory University and a master’s in international Relations from Georgia State University.

PROJECT 28 - Project 28 participants are female asylum seekers, in Italy with their children, spouses or relatives, from various nations, and assisted by local mentor women.  Our sewing project is by women for young women.  Join us!  We’re looking for seamstresses, designers, sponsors, health care professionals.

Check out our Refugee Bear Migration Map.  Many bears got new homes over the holidays. Tell us where your bear is and we’ll add your location to the map!  Send us a picture and the location of your refugee bear and we’ll add it to Instagram.  Follow the Refugee Bears on Instagram and Facebook . 2020 is a GENERAL ELECTION YEAR. 
If you’re an American Citizen, you can register to vote… even if you have never resided in the United States Request your Absentee Ballots now with your Federal Post Card Application, so you will be set for the entire year.  Let your voice be heard in the Presidential Primaries and General Election.  VOTING REGISTRATION INFO HERE.

VOLUNTEERS
We are a Volunteer Run Non-Profit Association. Volunteers run our Library, American Corner Programs and Activities.  We are looking for Volunteers to Work at the Cinema, Help with Sewing and with our Morning Activities at the Front Desk and in the Library, TESOL Speakers, Teen Maker Space Mentors, Assistants for Nati per Leggere.  Send us an email and we’ll find a role for you.  University of Trieste students in Humanities, P.R. and other majors can earn with us (CFU).  We accept students with a minimum of 75 hours (3 CFU).  You'll have a great experience and improve your English, while you also learn valuable life and people skills.  Contact us! aia.fvg@gmail.com 

AMERICAN CORNER TRIESTE – Since 2007, we have been part of the American Spaces Network.  Programs, consultation of the library, public internet access computers, and Wi-Fi are always Free and Open to the Public.  A great place to study, meet friends, bring your kids.  Specific sections of the library are dedicated to Educational Advising, Children’s Corner Library and Women’s Space.  Consult our on line catalog of Books and DVDs.   The American Corner also offers Life Skills in English Courses for Refugees and Case Workers thanks to a U.S. Department of State Grant and the US Diplomatic Mission to Italy.  The American Corner promotes the Refugee Bear Integration through Entrepreneurship Project, encouraging professional refugee tailors to use their skills.
