Super Bowl LVII, or 57, will engage many Americans on February 12

American-style football will be on the minds and television sets of millions of people February 12, when the 57th Super Bowl championship game kicks off. This year, the Philadelphia Eagles will face off against the Kansas City Chiefs  in Phoenix Arizona.

A game primer

American football, not to be confused with what is known in America as “soccer,” is an intensely physical game in which each player wears protective equipment and works with teammates to carry out complicated plays. The National Football League rulebook features 73 pages of rules, but the general idea is for a team on offense to pass or run with the oblong ball to the far end of a 100-yard-long field (about 90 meters) to score either a “touchdown” or a “field goal.”

American football is now flourishing in countries such as China, Brazil, Austria and Germany, and ITALY where 45,000 people play for about 450 teams, according to the American Football Coaches Foundation.
