Conference: Cinema As Art - July 8, 2014 - 6 pm

Conference:
CINEMA AS ART
An Introduction to the Art and History of Movies

July 8, 2014, 6 pm
Open to the Public

Speaker: Dr. Leslie Taubman
Adjunct Associate Professor at Fordham University, NY
Post - Doctoral Fellow, Harvard University
Juror, Brooklyn and Barbados International Film Festivals

Movies are one of the most dominant, dynamic, and influential art forms over the past century. In addition to being an art, film is also a product of science and technology; a business; a means of mass communication; a form of entertainment; and quite often, a controversial social phenomenon.

Dr. Taubman's lecture provides an introduction to film history - its directors, national styles, historic periods, genres, and modes (narrative, animation, documentary, and avant-garde). Leslie will discuss the 'language' of film - mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, sound design, and performance.

Clips from movies will be included with the presentation.

Leslie J. Taubman holds an M.A. in Cinema Studies from New York University and her Ph.D. in Communications-Cinema from the University of Southern California. In 2008-2009, Leslie was a Fulbright Scholar in Barbados,  where she developed the Film Studies program at the University of the West Indies, and was president of the jury for the Barbados International Film Festival. Leslie then served as juror for the Brooklyn and Bermuda International Film Festivals and in 2010 was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University.  Leslie serves an Adjunct Associate Professor at Fordham University in New York.
