JUNE
Summer is finally here! We certainly had a busy year full of new
initiatives, new and returning members and visitors! We are going to slow down the pace for the
summer, but we still have plans for you….for example - What better way to enjoy
the lazy hazy days of summer than with a great book! We have over 10,000 books to choose from!
TRIESTE USA:
1945 – 1954
What a great success!
Thanks to all of you and Pietro Spirito, Aldo D’Eliso, Chiara Barbo, Andrea
Magnani, Renzo Carbonera, Marco Simic ... and even to Tyrone Power. We all learned so much about those important
years in Trieste’s
history, and how that time period is still reflected in local culture,
lifestyle, memories. While our
conferences and documentaries are over for now, we will continue to offer our walking
tour to schools and groups with a minimum of 15 people. Call us for more information. Teachers, think about this opportunity for
your English or History classes in the Fall.

History Testimonials – We need your stories!
AIA FVG would like to create an Oral History of the American Presence in Trieste from 1945-1954.
Tell us what you remember in a Video Interview. Please contact us so we can put
you on the list.

Display is still up. The TRUST uniform
was supplied by: Marco Simic from the Associazione Culturale Marino Simic. They are planning a road trip for Historic
Military Vehicles on September 1-2.
MEMBERSHIP
DRIVE 2012/13
We already have temporary membership cards. Join now and take advantage of our library
all summer long! Be ready for the 2012/13 American Film Series. Membership is: €25
for students, teachers, over 65, €35
for regular membership. If you want your
children to use the library during the summer, we require that one parent to be
a member. It’s never too soon to renew!
Leda
Cempellin, Assistant Professor of Art History, South Dakota State
University, will discuss the Neil
Cockerline collection of 500 Pop Art Prints
from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s donated to the South Dakota Art Museum
in Brookings in early 2011. In addition to Warhol, the collection, valued at $2
million, features works by Jim Dine,
Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Motherwell, Henri Matisse and Robert Indiana.

NEWS
We
are now on-line. You can view our
collection at Collectorz. All DVD’s are in, while the Book collection remains
a work in progress (so many books, so little time!). Thank you, Volunteers, for your hard work
adding and cataloguing materials.
Summertime is a great time to pick up a book and let
your imagination go wild! We have
something for everybody – From Dr. Seuss and Judy Moody to The Tex Mex
Cookbook… everything ever written by
Mark Twain or Tom Clancy… What to Expect When You’re Expecting, to TOEFL Test
Guides… Time Magazine to Redbook. Give
us a permanent slot in your afternoon calendar each week. Summer Inventory: Please return all
overdue books and dvd’s before the August vacation (deadline July 30) .

Presentation Wednesday, June 13th – 6:00 p.m.
Bring the kids, check out books, and READ TO WIN!
Our program includes:
- Score Card to keep track of how many books you read
from June 13th until September 10th (for kids and
adults!)
- Fantastic prizes when you meet your goals!
- Name the Bookworm Mascot Contest
An awards ceremony to recognize participants will be
held in September after school starts. Register to participate. Yes, adults can
also compete in a separate contest!
STORYTIME
LIGHT – All Summer (except August) on Wednesdays at 6 p.m.
We will have an informal Summer-long Storytime on
Wednesdays at 6 p.m. Our mother tongue
Mommies (and Daddies) will delight you with reader’s choice. June dates:
13th, 20th, 27th. A Call for Middle School and High School
volunteers!

LIBRARY HOURS
This summer we will do some extraordinary maintenance
on our premises. We have reduced our
hours in order to get the work done and to give our volunteers some well-deserved
R and R (Rest and Relaxation).
June: Regular
Hours - Monday to Friday: 4-8 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday mornings 10-noon
July: Reduced
Hours - Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 4- 8 p.m.
Summer Holidays: July 30 – August 19
August 20 – 31 – Reduced Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday 4-8 p.m.
Celebrate
Independence Day (a few days late) in style. This premier
jazz band of the US Air
Forces in Europe will play in Trieste! They
continue the distinctive musical tradition of the late Major Glenn Miller and his Army Air Forces
band with the smooth Swing Era sounds of Jimmy
and Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Duke
Ellington, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, and Louis Armstrong.
Their repertoire strolls down a jazz composer hall of fame--past, present, and
future. More details coming soon!

Coffee Hours are finished until September. Thanks to
all the participants and especially to Franco, Simonetta, and Giancarlo for
being the perfect hosts. See you in the Fall.

COOKING SCHOOL
Thanks to Andrea Tamburini we took a cross-country
gastronomic tour: Tex Mex - Texas,
Cajun -New
Orleans, California Fusion Los
Angeles. Thank you Andrea! Who knows
where your travels and our Cooking
School will go next year?

volunteer, caterer, Italian teacher, English teacher, chef, friend.
GREAT
NEWS!
The American Corner was approved for a $10,000
sustaining grant from the US Government! This money can be used for books and
equipment for our library. Way to go, Corner! We are getting ready for next
year and planning the new Storytime Season, which will include PUPPETS as Guest
Readers! We can’t wait!
