AMERICAN FILM SERIES in ORIGINAL LANGUAGE at the ARISTON, Showtimes:  2, 4:30, 7 and 9:30 p.m.
May 3th - Film series: J. Edgar, a film by Clint Eastwood with  Leonardo  DiCaprio and Naomi Watts, one nomination  for Golden Globe. This film lasts 137 minutes so we have changed the show times as written above.   Our office remains closed in the afternoon.   See you at the cinema!

TRIESTE USA: 1945 – 1954, A WALKING TOUR,  Via Roma 15, 10:00 a.m.
Learn what Trieste was like under the Allied Military Government.  We are offering a 2-hour presentation and walking tour in English presenting the landmarks of TRUST (Trieste US Troops).  Our guide Edi Caropresi will take us back to those days.  Check out the photos from the previous tour.  Did you know that JFK, Richard Nixon and Dwight Eisenhower were all here in 1952?  Special AMG currency and stamps were used here? Sea planes landed in Trieste?  Louis Armstrong played here?  Contact us for special tours for groups and schools with at least 15 people (special tours can be in Italian or English). 
May tour dates in English are:  Saturday, May 12th and Saturday, May 26th.  Contribution:  €10 per person (€8 for members). Call to reserve.

SPOTLIGHT on TRIESTE USA, Via Roma 15 - OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
We have a scheduled a series of Friday events to complement our TRIESTE USA theme.  These events are all Free and Open to the Public.  In addition, come by the association and see our photographic exhibit.  

May 4th – 6 p.m. - Conversation about life in Trieste under the A.M.G. with Pietro Spirito – journalist and author of “Trieste a Stelle e Strisce” e Aldo D’Eliso – director of “Stars and Stripes” in Trieste with the A.M.G. 1945-1954 and author of “Bari – Trieste e l’America in Tasca” (in Italian).
May 11th  - 6 pm  - Documentary - “Le Ragazze di Trieste” with the directors Chiara Barbo and Andrea Magnani.  Interviews with the girls from Trieste who married TRUST soldiers and moved to the US. (Bilingual Italian / English)
May 18th  -three showings: 3,  5 and 7pm  - Film - “Diplomatic Courier (1952) filmed in Trieste, starring Tyrone Power and Patricia O’Neal and featuring Karl Malden and Charles Bronson. (In English)
May 25th 6-7pm   - Documentary “Blue Jeans e Gonne Corte” with the director Renzo Carbonera. Trieste seemed to be a quiet place, but underneath the surface it was a world of spies, uncertainty. (In Italian).

May 10th 10-12am  Our monthly appointment for clever conversation (in English of course) and a cup of coffee.

AMERICAN COOKING SCHOOL
May 9th and 10th -6.30pm - California Fusion with Andrea! Learn the insider secrets of California Mediterranean Bistrot cuisine, preferred by the stars that Andrea cooked for at Patina and other L.A. restaurants.  Weather permitting, we’ll be able to enjoy our dinner outside on the terrace.  Request has been so great that this course will be offered twice on 2 separate evenings.  A cooking class only for members.  All lessons in English!    Cost: €40.  PlaceGastronomia Ludvig.  Call to reserve and pay in advance.

FRIDAY DOCUMENTARIES- Our regular documentary season has ended for this year.  Thanks to Michael Stavola for selecting a fantastic list and for being our “lights, video, action” man each Friday afternoon!  If you’re a documentary lover, don’t miss our special homegrown May documentaries for Trieste USA!

J. Edgar at the Ariston - May 3, 2012

J. Edgar is the last film in the 2011/12 Rassegna del Cinema Americano of the Associazione Italo Americana FVG.
Because the movie lasts 137 minutes, the showtimes will be:  2, 4:30, 7, and 9:30 p.m.
Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Leonardo DiCaprio.  The biography of this man and his 50 years in politics.
Cinema Ariston - viale Romolo Gessi - Trieste.  You must be a member to attend the film.

Life a House Built, 25th year anniversary of the Jimmy Carter & Rosalynn Carter Habitat for Humanity Project. - (PBS, 55 minutes)

Since leaving the presidency, Carter and his wife Rosalynn have been involved with building homes, all over the world, for the poor in the Habitat for Humanity volunteer program. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization which, since 1976, has built more than 100,000 houses in more than 60 countries, including some 30,000 houses across the United States. He hammers a straight nail and works humbly side by side with all the volunteers as a common citizen.In October 2002 Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Our next film sponsored by the Associazione Italo Americana FVG at the Ariston is THE HELP (not Beginners as was in our schedule). We are so happy to have this film based on the book by Kathryn Stockett.

1960's in Mississippi, the black women who dedicate their lives to the wealthy white families tell their stories to a young white writer, while risking their lives and their jobs.

Don't forget our tour tomorrow - April 14, 2012 - starting in our office - via roma 15 at 10 a.m. - Rain or shine.

A Walking Tour highlighting the downtown landmarks of the Allied Military Government and the hangouts of the TRieste US Troops as well as some historical background of the period. Tour in English (Upon request in Italian).Introduction at the Associazione Italo Americana FVG beginning at 10 a.m., Please arrive earlier. The same tour will also be proposed on April 28th, May 12th and 26th.

Donation requested: € 10 non-members, € 8 members. Children free of charge accompanied by an adult.

Our office will be closed for Easter vacation from April 6th – April 9th for Easter. Elementary and High School High classes will not be held on April 9th,10th or 11th. We will also be closed for the national holiday on April 25th.

SATURDAY STORYTIME CONCLUSION
Storytime was a great success and lots of fun thanks to all of you kids, parents and especially to our volunteers on the Storytime team (Jennifer, Lawrie, Joanne, Gerardo, Luisa, Giulia, Sara, Dario, Grace, Karen, Denise). The photos of the final Storytime of the year and diploma ceremony are on Facebook. See you next year! Don’t forget that our Children’s Corner Library is open all year long and you can come by anytime and check out a book. Stay tuned for a possible year-end Storytime trip to the farm!

LIBRARY NEWS
Thanks to the support of the US Embassy, we have a new modern check-out system for our Library. To keep everything under control, you can check out materials only during office hours when a Front Desk person is working. No trained library staff person, no books or DVD’s (that means you, too, Karoline!). Returns can be placed in our return box near the Front Desk. April is Amnesty Month for the Library (Thank goodness! –Karoline). If you have long overdue books and DVD’s (especially the ones that you found in your DVD player after you returned the empty box) please return them … no questions asked, no fines.
